So you finally agreed on a travel destination—what next? Develop a goal for your trip—relaxation, adventure/sightseeing, etc.—then start researching and build a spreadsheet—I’m a huge spreadsheet guy! Here’s some tips on what to include:
- Dig into your lodging options and list them out—name, cost, link to Google Map location and notes section for unique features (like nightly live music). Definitely check Google Maps to see what’s nearby. We like staying places that are walkable to restaurants/bars/sites. Use Google Map Street View to ensure that sidewalks exist!
- Like I said, we like walkable, so I start by checking out restaurants on Google maps. I have a (usually) strict 4.5 rating or higher policy—haven’t been disappointed yet! But remember, in some areas, a 4.3 may suck and in others, a 4.3 might be fantastic—hence the “usually” strict. After that, do Google searches for “best places to eat” in your destination. Make sure you think of all meals—breakfast, lunch and dinner. My spreadsheet usually includes restaurant name, distance from hotel, link to menu and a notes section for any unique features—live music on weekends, waterfront, etc.
- Research activities in the same way as you would restaurants. Start with proximity to where you’re staying, Google searches, etc. and add to your spreadsheet. If we’re heading on a sightseeing trip, try adding direction from your hotel and group together places that are north, south, east, west, etc., that way you can be as efficient as possible!
Note that I’m not saying to create an itinerary! I’ve never done that and never will. It’s just a way to organize your thoughts and make decisions on where to go and what to do! How do you prep for your trips?
